There is no doubt about the fact that we are currently immersed in the technological age. File sharing networks (such as the revolutionary server that was/is Napster) provide anyone who has access to the Internet with a forum through which they can search for and download almost any file type ranging from video and image to the more common MP3. MP3s are the most common format of audio file downloads. MP3s are readily convertible into .WAV files and can be easily transferred onto CDs for use in either standard CD players, or MP3 CD players. (Because MP3 files are incredibly smaller than CD standard WAV files, you can fit hundreds of MP3s on a single CD) Their small file size allows for the maximum amount of audio pleasure, as you can fit hundreds on a CD, and literally thousands on such digital players as the Apple I-Pod, which can basically store the entirety of your music collection.

Due to copyright laws and pressure exerted by the music industry, music downloads have recently come to the forefront of national news. Based on computer I.d's and other such computer technologies, agencies have been able to crackdown on file swappers, going so far as to arrest/fine thousands of users who have violated copyright laws. There continues to be a great deal of controversy surrounding the legality of such file sharing networks. Certain musicians/groups such as Metallica have sought legal action to put a stop to the copyright infringement that exists behind the downloading of free MP3's. (Unfortunately it has done little to quell the massive downloading frenzy) Proponents of file sharing networks believe that these services are no different than someone recording songs off the radio or copying a friends' CD. They argue that music downloading is simply a part of changing times that the music industry must come to grips with. They also argue that the cost to musicians is not too extreme, noting that most downloaders are simply looking to preview music before purchasing the CD. In response to this theory, listening stations have become a common site in music stores (including online music stores) offering a sampling of a CDs tracks to give the customer a better idea of whether or not they want to purchase said CD.

Napster was forced out of business following nationwide coverage. Not surprisingly, this did little to thwart the free MP3 industry, as several new networks such as Kazaa (recently in the news) and Scour simply took the place of Napster. The free MP3 controversy will undoubtedly continue. In an effort to thwart illegal downloads, many MP3 player providers have made partnerships with the music industry to offer MP3's for purchase online. Napster itself is back in business as a legal file-swapping network and in business with Samsung who offer a Napster based digital MP3 player that is compatible with Napster 2.0. Similarly, Apple offers access to its own itunes music store through which IPod owners can preview and purchase hundreds of thousands of stored MP3s.
